Washington DC Rodent Removal Tip:

How do rats fit in small holes, do they have bones?
No matter how much effort you put into sealing up entryways, rats always seem to get in. Holes you could never have imagined a rat squeezing through, become backdoors into your property. This extraordinary ability to squeeze into tight spaces has led to an abundance of urban myths.

Some state that rats have collapsible skeletons that let them scurry through small holes. Others say that their bones are made entirely out of cartilage. Even more fantastical, some contend they don't even have skeletons at all!

The reality is less fantastical but is essential to understand when attempting to keep rats off your property.

Do rats have bones?
Yes, of course, rats have bones! Rats are mammals, and by extension, they are vertebrates. This means they have a spine and a skeleton to match.

Rats don't just have bones; they have lots of bones – 223 bones to be precise. That's even more than a person – 17 bones more! These bones serve the same purpose they do in humans. They provide structure to the body, protect vital organs, and are used by muscles to move the body around. However, due to evolution, these bones are specially adapted to the rat's needs and functions. For instance, while humans have a small vestigial tail, rats have a long and bony tail extending from their spine.

Are rats' skeletons collapsible?
rodent trapping Rats can squeeze through holes as small as a US quarter – that's around one inch! How do you fit through a hole so little? Surely, they must have collapsible skeletons or bendy bones.

Actually, no.

Like all other mammal bones, their bones don't bend, they don't have any more cartilage, and they aren't collapsible. That's not to say they don't have a few tricks up their sleeve. To reduce their width, rats lack collar bones. That means they're able to bring their shoulders closer together, slimming their body down. Their rib cages also push in and expand to allow the rat to squeeze its mass through the tight holes.

How do rats judge a hole?
When approaching a hole, rats will first identify it with their eyes. If it is evidently wide enough, they will slip right through. However, for smaller holes, there is still a risk of getting stuck. In these cases, rats will use their nose and whiskers to determine the width. If they can fit through, then there is a high chance the rest of the rat will as well.

There are exceptions. If a rat has been dining on too much cheese, then the extra weight around the abdomen can cause them to get stuck. At such times, they can use their powerful hind legs to push them through. However, if their front gets stuck, the rat might struggle to pull themselves loose.

Conclusion
So, rats have bones. Their skeletons aren't collapsible, and they certainly aren't bendy, even if they look like it. Instead, rats rely on a few simple anatomical tricks as well as their whiskers to ensure they get through tight holes without a hitch. Nevertheless, rats can and do get stuck.

For homeowners, this means rats pose a significant risk to your property. Holes you might overlook, presuming rats wouldn't be able to squeeze through, may present a backdoor into your home. As such, all potential openings must be sealed, preventing any entry into the property. Failure to do so can have dire consequences to all properties.
